Industry leaders team up in global challenge to convert carbon dioxide into valuable products

Halifax, NS, Canada - Team CarbonCure, led by clean technology developer CarbonCure Technologies, has been selected as a semi-finalist in the global NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition. The team consists of Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES), Praxair, Inc., Argos, BURNCO Rock Products and several leading engineering and architectural firms, with additional carbon capture expertise provided by Southern Company. The team is one of 27 semi-finalists from around the world vying for their share of the $20 million prize purse.

Team CarbonCure is competing in the XPRIZE challenge to demonstrate that its solution is the most cost-effective, highest-impact and most scalable solution available today to recycle carbon dioxide (CO2) to make better building materials. The Carbon XPRIZE challenges teams to develop breakthrough technologies that convert the most CO2 into one or more products with the highest net value. Co-sponsored by NRG and COSIA, the multi-year competition is designed to address CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, a leading contributor to climate change. As part of the XPRIZE competition, Team CarbonCure will be hosting demonstrations of its CO2-utilizing technology in Alabama, Georgia, Wyoming, and Alberta over the next four years.

In addition to showcasing CarbonCure’s CO2-utilization technology, the project will feature several other innovative elements, including the demonstration of Sustainable Energy Solutions’ (SES) CO2-capture technology at a cement plant. The CO2 captured will then be sequestered into ready-mixed concrete produced at Argos’ concrete plants in the Atlanta region. In later rounds of the competition, CO2 will be collected from a natural gas plant in Alberta, and sequestered into concrete produced at BURNCO’s main Calgary, Alberta plant.

Southern Company will provide CO2 capture expertise on scale-up of the technology with the National Carbon Capture Center, which Southern Company manages and operates for the U.S. Department of Energy in Wilsonville, Alabama, serving as a host site, pending DOE approval.

Hosting both the capture and utilization technologies, Argos is a key partner in the project. “Argos is excited about joining CarbonCure’s XPRIZE team, as the challenge aligns well with our vision of promoting innovation and sustainability in the cement and concrete sectors,” says Lucas Moreno, VP of Innovation, Argos.

Coinciding with the XPRIZE semi-finalist announcement, Alberta concrete producer BURNCO Rock Products is also announcing that it has partnered with CarbonCure to provide low-carbon concrete products to the Calgary construction market. “Albertans are becoming increasingly concerned with finding solutions to mitigate carbon emissions,” says Norm Kuntz, Calgary District Manager at BURNCO. “We are proud to contribute towards a solution to carbon, while providing Albertans with the highest quality concrete.”

Praxair, Inc., a leading global industrial gas company, will provide CO2 distribution services throughout the project. According to Praxair’s Global Market Director, Abdul-Aziz Rashad, the company joined CarbonCure’s team since it sees a growing demand for CO2 applications. "Praxair's mission is making our planet more productive and joining this team was a great way to support that mission. CarbonCure's technology provides better building materials while reducing CO2 that would otherwise enter the atmosphere, a true win-win solution. As the leading supplier of captured and purified CO2 for numerous industrial applications, Praxair supports CarbonCure’s vision of developing economically beneficial uses for CO2.”
