Industry leaders team up in global challenge to convert carbon dioxide into valuable products
Calgary, AB, Canada - BURNCO Rock Products, a ready mixed concrete provider headquartered in Calgary, has been selected as a semi-finalist in the global NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition as a member of Team CarbonCure. BURNCO has installed CarbonCure's carbon dioxide (CO2) recycling technology and will supply the Calgary construction market with low carbon concrete as it competes in the global competition that’s been heralded as the “Nobel Prize” of the carbon industry.
BURNCO installed the CarbonCure technology in its Shepard, AB concrete plant in June 2016, and conducted testing throughout the summer to confirm the technology’s performance. The CarbonCure technology injects CO2 sourced from the smokestacks of industrial emitters into concrete, where the CO2 becomes chemically converted into a mineral and permanently captured within the concrete. The process helps to improve concrete’s compressive strength, which enables concrete producers to realize operational efficiencies that further reduce their products’ carbon footprint.

Team CarbonCure, led by Nova Scotia clean technology developer CarbonCure Technologies, also announced today that it has been selected as a semi-finalist in the global NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition. The Carbon XPRIZE challenges teams to develop breakthrough technologies that convert the most CO2 into one or more products with the highest net value. Co-sponsored by NRG and COSIA, the multi-year competition is designed to address CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, a leading contributor to climate change.
As part of the XPRIZE competition, Team CarbonCure is one of 27 semi-finalists from around the world who will be demonstrating its CO2-utilization technology in Alabama, Georgia, Wyoming and Alberta over the next four years. Along with BURNCO, the team consists of Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES), Praxair, Inc., Argos, and several leading engineering and architectural firms, with additional carbon capture expertise provided by Southern Company.
The team is also partnering with leading architects and structural engineers in the Atlanta and Calgary regions, including Read Jones Christoffersen (RJC) and DIALOG.
